Before taking off on your first solo flight, two administrative items must be completed: securing an FAA Medical Certificate and applying for an FAA Student Pilot Certificate.
While navigating federal paperwork can feel daunting to beginners, getting these credentials sorted early in your flight training prevents unexpected delays when you are ready to solo. Here is your clear guide on how to obtain both documents.
Step 1: Understanding FAA Medical Certificate Classes
An FAA Medical Certificate confirms that you meet the health standards required to pilot an aircraft safely. Medical exams must be performed by an official Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). There are three medical classes based on your long-term aviation goals:
1st Class Medical: Required for Airline Transport Pilots (ATP). Features the strictest physical standards and is essential if you plan a career flying for major air carriers or cargo operators.
2nd Class Medical: Required for commercial pilots flying for compensation (such as corporate charter, aerial photography, or flight instruction).
3rd Class Medical: Designed for Private Pilots flying for recreation or personal travel.
Note: If pursuing a Sport Pilot Certificate in our Van’s RV-12, a valid U.S. Driver's License can serve in lieu of a formal FAA medical exam, provided you have not previously been denied a medical.
Step 2: How to Apply via MedXPress
Create an account on the FAA MedXPress online portal (medxpress.faa.gov).
Complete the medical history form, detailing your medical background, medications, and health history.
Submit the form and print the confirmation number.
Schedule an appointment with an AME, bringing your confirmation number to the physical exam.
Step 3: Applying for Your Student Pilot Certificate
Your Student Pilot Certificate is the official document allowing you to fly solo under CFI supervision. Applying is completely free and handled electronically:
Create a user profile on the FAA IACRA website (iacra.faa.gov).
Start a new application for a "Student Pilot Certificate."
Meet with a Certified Flight Instructor at Visionary Aviation Academy. Your instructor will verify your identity (bring a valid passport or driver's license), review your application, and submit it electronically to the FAA.
Your official plastic Student Pilot Certificate will arrive in the mail within a few weeks.
