Private Pilot Checkride: Oral and Practical Test Prep

The Private Pilot Checkride—officially called the FAA Practical Test—is the final milestone standing between you and your pilot license. Administered by an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE), the test evaluates your aeronautical knowledge, decision-making, and flight proficiency.

While feeling nervous before a checkride is completely normal, thorough preparation turns anxiety into quiet confidence. Here is how to prepare for both the oral examination and practical flight test at Visionary Aviation Academy.

Phase 1: Mastering the Oral Exam

The checkride begins on the ground with an oral questioning session lasting 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The examiner will evaluate your knowledge across real-world scenarios:

  • Cross-Country Flight Planning: You will present a hand-calculated or ForeFlight navigation log for a assigned cross-country route, explaining weather reports (METARs/TAFs), fuel calculations, weight and balance, and airspace restrictions.

  • Aircraft Systems & Performance: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of your aircraft's systems—whether explaining the fuel injection system of a Cessna 172 or the flight displays of our Van’s RV-12.

  • FARs & Medical Regulations: Be ready to answer questions regarding pilot currency, required aircraft inspection logs, VFR weather minimums, and personal health minimums (IMSAFE checklist).

Phase 2: Aceing the Practical Flight Test

Once the oral portion is complete, you will head to the ramp for the practical flight exam (1.2 to 1.8 hours). You will be evaluated strictly against the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS):

  • Pre-Flight & Taxi: Demonstrate disciplined checklist usage, passenger safety briefings, and precise taxi control.

  • Steep Turns & Ground Reference: Maintain altitude within $\pm 100$ feet and airspeed within $\pm 10$ knots during steep turns, rectangular courses, and S-turns.

  • Slow Flight & Stall Recoveries: Execute power-off and power-on stalls smoothly, recovering promptly with minimal altitude loss.

  • Emergency Operations: Demonstrate immediate, calm procedures during simulated engine failures, system malfunctions, and emergency landings.

  • Takeoffs & Landings: Perform normal, short-field, soft-field, and crosswind landings consistently to ACS precision standards.
