Walking into a flight school for your very first official flight lesson is an unforgettable experience. If you are feeling a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation, knowing exactly what to expect from the moment you step onto the ramp will put your mind at ease.
Your introductory lesson at Visionary Aviation Academy is designed to be safe, hands-on, and educational, giving you direct control of an aircraft high above the Mid-South landscape.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough of Lesson One
Your first flight lesson follows a structured three-part sequence:
1. Pre-Flight Ground Briefing (15–20 Minutes)
Before heading to the airplane, you and your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) will sit down to review the lesson plan. You’ll discuss how aircraft flight controls operate (elevator, ailerons, and rudder), basic cockpit instruments, safety procedures, and local weather conditions.
2. Pre-Flight Aircraft Inspection (15–20 Minutes)
You’ll head out to the ramp to conduct a hands-on walkaround inspection of the aircraft. Your instructor will show you how pilots check fuel quality, verify oil levels, inspect control surfaces, and ensure the airframe is 100% airworthy before engine start.
3. The Flight & Post-Flight Debrief (45–60 Minutes)
Taxi & Takeoff: You'll put on your aviation headset, assist with engine start, and ride along as your instructor taxis and takes off.
Taking the Controls: Once at a safe altitude over Memphis, your CFI will hand control of the airplane to you! You will practice straight-and-level flight, gentle turns, climbs, and descents.
Landing & Debrief: Your CFI handles the landing approach, brings the plane smoothly back to the ramp, signs your official pilot logbook, and discusses your next steps.
What to Bring and How to Prepare
To ensure a smooth first flight, keep these simple prep tips in mind:
Bring Government-Issued ID: A valid driver's license or passport is required for airport security clearance.
Dress comfortably: Wear comfortable casual clothes and flat, closed-toe shoes (like running shoes) for easy rudder pedal control.
Bring Sunglasses: Cockpit glare can be intense on bright days over the Mississippi River.
